When the time comes to take down the Christmas ornaments, I always think of what I can do to keep that feeling we have when we put them up – a feeling of expectation. This isn’t always easy to do. Here in the Midwest January can be very dreary with grey days and not much sun. So, I come up with ideas to give my home a different look. One of the ways I do this is by using my wedding dress pillows to transform a bedroom. I can take away the Christmas candles and trees and add touches of greenery and/or flowers. How fun to walk into your bedroom and see not only your pillows but also a pick me up for dreary days.
Some of us have to share our space with others. It may be our kids, our spouse or other family members. So, how do we share the space and also display our own personal items that are close to our hearts and bring back memories? We want our home to reflect us, but we also want to make it comfortable for others.
Years ago I finished decorating my bedroom with lots of flowers and bows. When our friend saw it, he commented that, “It looks like a little girl’s room.” My husband replied, “I don’t care as long as the little girl lets me in there.” All spouses may not feel that way, and we need to respect that. So, what do we do?
THe first thing we can do is connect with the past. Perhaps you have pictures of your grandparents or someone who was very special to you at a certain time in your life. The pictures can be arranged attractively in frames that will accent your room. There may be a piece of furniture that is very special. I have a rocker in my office that is over 100 years old. My grandmother sat in that rocker on her sun porch every day. I refinished it and covered the cushion with fabric that matches the office walls.
The second thing we can do is display a momento of a trip, special day or a milestone in our life. When I travel, I look for fabric that I can use for accents in my home. I look for colors that will co-ordinate with other fabrics and colors that I have used. This is a picture of fabric that was purchased in Viet Nam that accents the colors in my living room. When I look at this pillow, it brings back many memories and makes me re-live the wonderful experience of being in that country.
Think about what you have now that could become a part of your home to maike you feel happy and confortable.
